Hectic campaign for Ctg polls
Awami League lawmaker Akhteruzzaman Chowdhury at a meeting yesterday urged all to cast votes for AL-backed mayor candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury to turn Chittagong a healthy and environment friendly city.
He also urged the leaders and activists to keep unity and work actively for ensuring the victory of Mohiuddin in the June 17 Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election.
Akhteruzzaman, also AL (south) district unit president, was addressing the view-exchange meeting at the Nagorik Committee office with people hailing from southern region of Chittagong and living in the city.
Earlier in a street meeting at Mohra ward in the afternoon, Mohiuddin called upon his supporters to remain alert against any conspiracy of snatching votes. "Vote snatchers are again in the field. We have to foil any attempt to hijack the votes."
AL leaders Abdus Salam, Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury, Mohra Nagorik Committee President Abu Taher, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Mohiuddin also spoke at several street meetings at Korbaniganj, Miakhan Pool, Ishak Pool at Bakalia.
Mohiuddin's wife Hasina Mohiuddin carried out mass contact in different areas of Patharghata in the morning in support of her husband.
Manjur's campaign
BNP-backed and Chattagram Unnayan Andolon candidate M Manjur Alam Manju yesterday carried out electoral campaign stressing to develop Chittagong as a violence and anarchy-free city and rid the dwellers of waterlogging.
During his mass contact in west, east and south Bakolia (CCC ward no 17, 18 and 19) area, Manjur said absence of measures to develop drainage or remove waterlogging cause a huge area of Bakolia going under water after a little downpour.
Manju sought votes to help flourish potential small and cottage industries accelerating economic growth and developing Bakolia as a water-logging free area.
Earlier, he held a view exchange meeting with leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations from No 2 Jalalabad Ward, met people of Shapla Residential Area and those from Harijan community at his North Katolli residence in the morning.
BNP Chittagong city unit Vice-President Shamsul Alam, General Secretary Dr Shahadat Hossain, Jatiya Party leader Noor Mohammad Khan and other leaders of BNP-led four-party alliance, among others, accompanied Manju.
He was holding a meeting with people of the Hindu community, exchanging views and seeking votes at Mehedibagh residence of his main election agent and BNP Chittagong city unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Besides, BNP Standing Committee Member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman and Vice-Chairman Morshed Khan also carried out campaigns for Manju throughout the day.
