School kids' artwork exhibition begins

An artwork exhibition of primary and secondary school students titled 'Biodiversity for life' began at Drik Gallery in the city yesterday. Wetland Biodiversity Rehabilitation Project and the Integrated Protected Area Co-Management jointly organised the exhibition and a write-up competition on the occasion of International Day of Biological Diversity and the World Environment Day, says a press release. Both the projects are supporting the efforts of the Department of Fisheries in biodiversity conservation, rehabilitation and management. The German government through Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and USAID have supported the implementation of the projects. An award giving ceremony was also held. The students took part in a competition held in six districts and their work was put on display in the Drik Gallery yesterday. The winners of each district were awarded at the programme. Hans Hinrich Schnelle, first secretary, development cooperation of German embassy in Dhaka, present as special guest. He handed over the awards to the winners. "These kind of initiatives will encourage new generations to preserve the environment," Hans said. Noted artist Aly Zaker, environment and climate change specialist Alamgir Hossain and Project Director of Wetland Biodiversity Rehabilitation Project Abul Hashem also spoke. The organisers received over 500 artworks and 300 write-ups which clearly demonstrate the interest, commitment and understanding of the kids about the importance and role that biological diversity plays in their lives. The exhibition will remain open to public till June 9.
