Mahmudur gets bail in 4 cases
The High Court (HC) yesterday granted ad-interim bail to Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of recently closed daily Amar Desh, in four separate criminal cases filed against him.
An HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque also issued separate rules asking the government to explain as to why Mahmudur Rahman should not be granted regular bail in these cases.
The bench granted him bail till submissions of police reports to the lower courts in these four cases.
The orders came following four separate petitions filed by Mahmudur Rahman seeking bail in the cases.
Mahmudur's counsel Barrister Abdur Razzaq told The Daily Star that there is no bar to his client's release from jail following the HC orders of bail.
If the government does arrest Mahmudur Rahman in any other case, and does not file appeals with the Supreme Court against the HC orders, and the apex court does not stay the HC orders, he will be released, he added.
The police filed four separate cases with Bimanbandar, Uttara, Tejgaon and Kotwali Police Stations against Mahmudur Rahman in connection with the Uttara conspiracy and having links with banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir and obstructing police in discharging duties.
The cases were filed on different dates in June this year.
