Accountability of political parties stressed
Academics and intellectuals at a roundtable yesterday stressed the need for ensuring accountability of political parties to establish rule of law and strengthen democracy in the country.
They observed political parties do not show any responsibility for the people for establishing rule of law, rather the parties work only for getting political gains, ignoring interests of the common people.
Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad organised the roundtable on 'Democracy and rule of law' at the National Press Club in the morning.
Former chief election commissioner Justice M Abdur Rouf, Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, eminent journalist Ataus Samad and former DhakaUniversity pro-vice chancellor AFM Yusuf Haider spoke at the roundtable with Dean of Arts Faculty of Dhaka University Prof Sadrul Amin in the chair.
Justice Rouf said the existing political parties have been destroying democracy in the name of democracy and if this trend continues, the rule of law will gradually be disappeared.
He said the principal objective of democracy is to build a common trust among the political parties, but, parties here do not trust each other.
Khandakar Mahbub said present government has released some 26,000 'criminals' by administrative order and rule of law can not be established such way.
He stressed the need for changing the mindset of the people for ensuring the rule of law. “If we can not change our mindset, we will not able to ensure democracy,” he added.
