The parliamentary standing committee on cultural affairs ministry yesterday decided to recommend enactment of new law to punish the drivers killing people on roads and highways and construct road dividers to minimise accidents. The decision came at the 13th meeting of the committee after two top government officials, Women Affairs Secretary Razia Begum and chairman of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Siddiqur Rahman, were killed in a road accident on Saturday. Held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee chairman Kazi Keramat Ali in the chair, the meeting offered prayers for deceased souls of the bureaucrats and BNP's former secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan. It also offered prayers for Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members who were killed on August 15, 1975 and victims of grenade attack of August 21, 2004, including Ivy Rahman. The committee observed one-minute's silence to pay homage to memories of the deceased and prayed for their eternal peace. The meeting recommended for removing all sorts of irregularities at the national museum and asked authorities concerned to submit regular annual reports. The committee also extended the tenure of a sub-committee, formed to investigate the incident of precious national artifacts sent to a museum in France, for 15 more days. Committee members Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad, State Minister for Cultural Affairs Promod Mankin, Monoranjan Shil Gopal, Advocate Tarana Halim, Momotaz Begum, Mahfuza Mandal and Nilofar Chowdhury Moni were present at the meeting.
