'Fix minimum wage for RMG workers at Tk 5,000'
Leaders of the Gonotrantik Bam Morcha, a platform of some left-leaning political parties, yesterday demanded that the minimum wage of garment workers be re-fixed at Tk 5,000 considering the price hike of essentials.
They also demanded immediate release of workers' leaders detained on charge of creating anarchy and withdrawal of the cases filed against them. They placed the demands at a press conference in city yesterday.
According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention the minimum wage for a worker is much higher than Tk 5,000, said Abdus Salam, coordinator of the platform, adding that it will be injustice, if the minimum salary goes below the amount.
Terming the government's move to launch police attack on workers and arrest them as indulging in non-democratic and unconstitutional demonstrations, they alleged that the government had joined hand with the owners to deprive the workers from their just wage.
They also demanded rights of trade unionism at every garment factory to bring stability in this sector.
Meanwhile, leaders of Garments Sramik Sangram Parishad placed the same demands and stressed the need for a tripartite meeting among government, owners and workers' representative to resolve the deadlock.
