Law to stop indiscriminate extraction of sand, soil
The cabinet yesterday approved Balumahal and Soil Management Act 2010 in a bid to stop indiscriminate extraction of sand and soil from rivers and ensure proper land management.
The draft proposed a legal ban on extraction of sand, mud and soil within one kilometre of important bridges, dams, barrages, highways, forests, rail tracks, gas and electricity lines.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting the prime minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said land secretary, who is the sole authority from now on, would monitor and control sand extraction from the rivers. This is instead of two existing system of authorities-one in Dhaka and another one in every district.
He said people seeking lease of government khas land would not need to come to the ministry. Divisional commissioners will handle land leasing at their respective offices, added Azad.
A proposal for formation of ICT Development Company Ltd under Bangladesh Computer Council was sent back for further scrutiny.
