Mirza Abbas on 8-day remand

Court Correspondent
A Dhaka court yesterday placed BNP leader Mirza Abbas on an eight-day remand in connection with two separate cases filed against him on charge of preventing police from discharging their duties during the hartal hours on June 27. Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafa Shahriar Khan passed the order after the investigation officers (IOs) of the cases produced Abbas before the court seeking a 14-day remand. The cases were filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations following the violence during the hartal. Meanwhile, BNP backed lawyers who took part in the hearing became excited over hearing the remand order and hurled abusive words at the magistrate. In the forwarding report, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Fazlul Haque, also the IO of the case filed with Paltan police, said being instructed by Abbas, BNP leaders and activists had prevented police from discharging their duties, vandalised vehicles and hurled bombs at Bijoynagar during hartal hours. So, he needs to be remanded to find out clues about his instructions, the IO said. Sub-Inspector Samir Chandra, the IO of the case filed with Motijheel police said, Abbas had instructed his party leaders and activists to obstruct movement of the vehicles and set those on fire during hartal hours. So, he needs to be remanded to know whereabouts of those responsible for committing such offences, the IO added. On the other hand, defence lawyers submitted bail petitions saying that their client was implicated in the cases as part of a conspiracy to harass him. Moreover, his name was not included in the first information report. So, they prayed for rejecting the remand petitions and granting their client bail in the cases. After hearing both the sides, the magistrate rejected his bail petitions and placed him on an eight-day remand for interrogation. Later, the defence lawyers submitted petitions to another court seeking a stay order on the remand for 15 days, but the court summarily rejected the pleas. Police picked up Mirza Abbas, also BNP standing committee member, during the hartal hours and later he was shown arrested in the cases filed with Motijheel, Paltan and Ramna police stations on June 27.
