Jakarta ministerial meet begins today
Indonesia is to host a two-day special ministerial meeting to review efforts to comply with Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) among the countries in Asia Pacific region beginning today in Jakarta.
Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni left Dhaka for Jakarta early yesterday to attend the “Special Ministerial Meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Review in Asia and the Pacific: Run up to 2015.”
Besides reviewing the progress of MGDs efforts in each country, officials said the delegates will also seek innovations in channelling the Official Development Assistance (ODA) financing innovation committed by donor countries following the financial crisis in donor countries.
Representatives from World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will also participate in the ministerial meeting.
According to the officials, the result of review conducted in the meeting will be brought to the United Nations (UN) MDGs meeting scheduled on September 20- 22 in New York.
The MDGs are the most broadly supported comprehensive and specific development goals, the world has ever agreed upon.
Adopted in 2000, set to be achieved by 2015, it includes eight goals and targets that consisted of income, poverty eradication, hunger, maternal and child mortality, disease, inadequate shelter, gender inequality, environmental degradation and the global partnership for development.
Dipu Moni is expected to return to Dhaka on August 5.
