Plea for arrest warrant against Shah Alam rejected

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected a plea for issuance of arrest warrant by the prosecution against Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam in connection with a case filed in June 2007 on charge of grabbing public properties. During yesterday's hearing on charges against Shah Alam and three others, Additional Public Prosecutor Saiful Islam appealed to the court to issue an arrest warrant as Shah Alam went into hiding following the filing of the case. However, First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan said that since an arrest warrant was issued on February 12, 2008 and advertisements were published in two Bangla dailies asking the accused to appear before the court on the scheduled dates, no fresh warrant was necessary. The court also fixed August 30 for the next hearing of the case. The other accused in the case are Abu Sufian, Shamsuddin Ahmed and Abul Kalam Shamim. The prosecution said Shah Alam and the three others grabbed 80 acres of public property at Baridhara in the city, causing a great loss to the government. Inspector Salahuddin of Detective Branch of police filed the case with Badda Police Station on June 7, 2007. Sub-Inspector Sohrab Hossain, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, pressed charges against the accused on February 5, 2008. The IO also prayed for issuance of an arrest warrant against Shah Alam and an order to attach his properties as he had been hiding. Following the plea, the court on February 12 the same year issued an arrest warrant against the Bashundhara chairman. Shah Alam, accused in a dozen cases, was earlier convicted of evading tax and possessing illegal currencies. CASE AGAINST KALER KANTHA
