AL won't tolerate extortion in party name
Says Obaidul Quader
Awami League (AL) presidium member Obaidul Quader yesterday urged people to remain alert to "toll collection" by many organisations using the names of the party, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members on various occasions.
"Inform the party office immediately if anyone or any organisation collects toll in the name of observing the National Mourning Day on August 15 and we will take action against such organisations," he said at a discussion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the city.
Amra Muktijoddhar Sontan organised the discussion with its president Humayun Kabir in the chair.
The AL policymaker said whenever the party comes to power many organisations are constituted using the names of the party and Bangabandhu, and they start collecting extortion ahead of national programmes in different days, including March 26, August 15 and December 16.
But such profit-seeking organisations, however, are never found in the time of movements, he said.
Ouader said BNP is much interested to save war criminals than Jamaat-e-Islami giving legal supports to the culprits.
State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam said the government has taken Jamaat leader Abdullah Mohammad Taher's remarks as a threat.
He also said they asked the law enforcement agencies to find out the powers behind Taher's remarks.
AL leader Afzal Hossain and former secretary general of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Abdul Jalil Bhuyian, also spoke at the discussion.
