Raise voice against militancy

Minister urges teachers, students

Education Minister Nurul Islam Naheed yesterday called upon teachers and students to unite and play an active role in rooting out all sorts of vices like terrorism and militancy from the country. Tagging terrorism and militancy a threat to humanity, he said none should accept such heinous acts, which pose a major barrier to peace and prosperity. The education minister was speaking at a seminar on `Combating Militancy and Remedies', in the auditorium of the Government Titumir College in the city. May this function, he said, be the beginning of an anti-militancy campaign in all educational institutions across the country. Secretary of the college Prof Ishrat Jahan chaired the function while Education Secretary Syed Ataur Rahman and Director General of Secondary and Higher Education Directorate Noman-ul-Rashid spoke as special guests. Prof Selim Akand of Bengali department of the college presented the keynote paper highlighting background of the militancy. Among others, Principal of the college Prof AKM Zahar Hossain, Vice-principal of the College Prof Anis Fatema and Associate Prof M Yusuf spoke. Nurul Islam blamed the previous government for supporting militant activities, which he said also helped perpetrators get important posts in the country. The war criminals would be tried shortly to establish rule of law in the country, he hoped and sought support from all to supplement the government efforts to that end. About eve teasing, he said the country's thousands of female students cannot go to schools because of the unethical practice. The new education policy would greatly help students change mindset towards female students, he said. Special emphasis has been given in the education policy so that students can be groomed as worthy citizens to carry the nation forward in future, said the education minister. Ataur Rahman favoured forging a strong social movement incorporating students against militancy and terrorism. "You must remain alert so none can misguide you in disguise of students," he said.
