BNP's opinion
I am really happy to note the contents of public address of Begum Khaleda Zia in her party's public rally at Paltan on 9 August 2010. Her whole speech was within usual accusations of government's failures and faults. Most opposition parties in the world do the same as she has done. People also know this fact and did not take it seriously except few diehard supporters who are again out of income due to their party's present position and some media outlets which are projecting it as a threat and confusing the people.
However, I have noted two important points from her speech, one is the just concluded Agreement with India and the other one is the court cases against her party men. The first point she has used purely on political reason necessary to speak out against as an opposition party leader and the second one is not only for her party men, it is her own interest as she is one of the accused in court cases.
Regarding Indo-Bangla agreement, she has termed it as a "Golami Chukti" meaning agreement of slaves with the master. She knows that this historic agreement with the country's big neighbour is an achievement of the present government and if it is maintained by the big one it will bring big fortune for the nation. We thank the present prime minister for her courage and sympathy for the nation. The opposition leader very well knows that there always remains some 'give-and-take" in every mutual agreement. In this agreement too, there are some clauses like give-and-take points.
She has also singed similar agreements with many countries during her reign as prime minister of Bangladesh. So her threat of agitation programmes against the government for cancellation of the agreement will not hold much water in her anchor.
Now her point of court cases, I think the government should proceed carefully and should not allow any sort of vindictive prosecutions. The government should check and re-check and be doubly assured that the accusations brought against any political leader have hard evidences against his or her. The prime minister herself was one of the victims of such hurried cases which her government had to withdraw because they were found later on as politically motivated ones.
The country will be benefited from the mutual cooperation of both treasury and opposition benches. Both should join each other's Iftar parties and shake hands which the nation expects from the leaders.
