Public transport system
Once, I had a chance to go to Mumbai and I was amazed by their transport system. They have good rail network to travel in the city. Thousands of people are travelling by train to go to work or anywhere in the city all the time. For that reason, There is not much traffic on the road.
On the other hand, we completely depend on the road transports to travel in Dhaka. So it is not surprising that we get so much traffic jam on our roads. To solve this problem, we need to introduce an effective public transport system in Dhaka. We need to reduce our dependency on the road transports.
Every now and then, we hear so many promises from our leaders to solve this problem. We have been listening about Underground train or Monorail so many times but never seen any steps to introduce them. I think the reason is it is not practical to set up them in Dhaka at the moment.
My suggestion in this regard is , introduce a railway system through the city like Mumbai. It would be practical and viable to set up train communication. For example, if we move our main train station from Kamalapur to Gazipur and then we can start a train service from Gazipur to Narayanganj. We need two lines next to each other.
These trains can stop in different places in side the city. Similarly, another service can run from Farmgate or Mohakhali to Savar via Mirpur/Cantonment. Another line can be set up from Keraniganj to Savar through the 'Beribadh'.
When these trains will be running, they might hamper the road transport. For that reason, some low-cost flyovers or bridges need to be built.
I hope the authorities will think about this.
