'Ensure women's equal right to land'
The discriminatory inheritance laws, whether they are Muslim, Hindu or else, need amendment to ensure women's right to land, speakers told a workshop yesterday.
Land ownership is a key determinant of poverty and inequality. Promoting women's right to land will help their empowerment, as land is a major social asset, they said.
Dr Abul Barkat, the keynote speaker at the workshop, said women constitute 50 percent of the total population and perform up to 92 types of activities in the society. But they own only two percent of the total land.
Meher Afroz Chumki, chairperson of parliamentary standing committee on land, said inheritance laws, both Muslim and Hindu, are biased towards men.
Religious fanatics feel threatened whenever there are talks about amending these laws to ensure equal rights to property, she added.
The Asian Regional Workshop on Women and Land Rights was jointly organised by Association of Land Reform and Development (ALRD), Asian Coalition for Agrarian Reforms and Rural Development (ANGOC) and International Land Coalition, Rome at Brac Centre Inn in the city.
