Expedite implementation of commitments: FM

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni yesterday asked the ministries concerned to expeditiously implement the commitments and understandings made in the joint communiqué issued during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India in January. She called an inter ministerial meeting at the foreign ministry yesterday, a day after similar meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office headed by an adviser to the premier, Masihur Rahman. Both the meetings were aimed to review the progress implementation of the 51-point joint communiqué issued during Sheikh Hasina's visit to the neighbouring country on January 10-13 at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh. “So far the progress of implementation of the joint communiqué is satisfactory,” Dipu Moni told The Daily Star and two other reporters emerging from the meeting. The meeting attended by senior officials from eight ministries, including home, finance, shipping, energy and foreign affairs lasted about three and a half hours till 6:30pm. “We have gone through the joint communiqué and examined the problems and obstacles to its implementation,” the foreign minister added. Meeting sources said the foreign minister enquired about the progress of the projects taken up with consent of both the countries, which will be implemented by one billion dollars line of credit from India. The meeting opined to appoint a key person in each ministry to monitor the progress of implementation and attend the inter-ministerial meetings. Dipu Moni proposed that the key-person should be a joint secretary level official, who will represent the ministry in the meetings.
