Sweepers protest arrest of fellows

A group of sweepers early yesterday laid nearly a four-hour long siege to Jatrabari Police Station demanding release of their fellows arrested during an anti-drug drive. Police said around one hundred sweepers from City Colony at Dhalpur in Jatrabair laid the siege from 1:15am to 4:00am as Jatrabari police arrested six of their fellows during the drive on Monday. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman of Jatrabari Police Station said on Monday afternoon they conducted a raid at the City Colony and arrested 11 persons with drugs. Of the arrestees, six are the sweepers of Dhaka City Corporation, he said. The police officer said some sweepers' leaders demanded release of the six and after denial of the demand, they regrouped and laid the siege at the police station around 1:15am. During the siege, the agitating sweepers used some garbage vehicles, spade and their baskets to block the entrance of the police station, said police. Deputy Commissioner Gazi Mozammel Hoque of Wari Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said they assured the sweepers that their arrested fellows would not be harassed if they are found innocent.
