PM assures support for FFs

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said she does not want to see any freedom fighter leading a distressed and inhuman life and assured all out support of her government for their well-being. “I don't want to see freedom fighters living inhuman life and passing their days in miserable condition while I am alive,” she said. The PM was addressing the installation and oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh Freedom Fighters' Central Command Council-District and Upazila Commands at the Bangladesh Army Stadium in the city's Banani. LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam was the special guest at the function chaired by State Minister for Liberation War Affairs AB Tajul Islam. The PM directed the government offices and officials concerned to take necessary steps to mitigate the sufferings of the freedom fighters. She also urged the freedom fighters to prepare lists for their respective areas mentioning names and addresses of the freedom fighters so that the government could take quick and necessary actions. “We will build houses for the homeless, provide work and food. We will not leave any stone unturned for the welfare of the freedom fighters,” Hasina said. But she cautioned on people impersonating as freedom fighters and requested the genuine freedom fighters to remain alert in this connection. “You (freedom fighters) are the greatest sons of the nation. We are here for you and we will provide all sorts of facilities for you,” she said. In this regard, the PM mentioned that this time her government took steps to provide 30 percent quota of government jobs to the family members of the freedom fighters. “In the past, this quota was reserved for the freedom fighters, but now we allocated that quota for the children and grandchildren of the freedom fighters,” she said. Earlier, the PM administered oath to the 6,431 office bearers of the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters' Central Command Council-District and Upazila Commands. The PM said the government enhanced the allowances of freedom fighters from Tk 1,500 to Tk 2,000 and the number of beneficiaries to 150,000 from 125,000, increased their age in service by 2 years, provides ration to 7,838 war-wounded and martyred freedom fighters families and provided abandoned houses for these families. Besides, she said, a 'Palli' (village) is being constructed for the freedom fighters. At the outset of the programme, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of Bangbandhu, the four national leaders and martyred freedom fighters. Chairman of the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters' Central Command Council Helal Morshed Khan Bir Bikram also spoke on the occasion. Liberation War Affairs Ministry organised the function with assistance of the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters' Central Command Council.
