Rupganj flies into fury (October 24, 2010)
I wonder why a large number of army families should live in an area of 6000 bighas of land. I even find it immoral to buy land at a cheaper price. A large number of people have been living in the 4 moujas of Rupganj. But suddenly the army personnel are forcing them to sell their lands at a lower price than the market price. This is not legal. The Bangladesh army has been benefited through UN mission and they are rich. They should buy land from open market at market price.
Anonymous In a democratic country such action of law enforcers is illegal.
Towhid Salam This is outrageous. Nobody has the right to force anyone to sell his land. There is, however, something called eminent domain i.e. compulsory purchase /compulsory acquisition by which the state can seize a citizen's private property by monetary compensation and even without the owner's consent. The property is taken either for govt. use or for public or civic use or, in some cases, economic development. The army must not involve in such activities. The govt. should take the matter seriously and punish those responsible for this illegal land grabbing.
Tayeb Husain The govt. should look into the matter quickly.
Salauddin Thanks to The Daily Star for an impartial report. We are very unfortunate in the third world countries where men in uniform are the most powerful.
Aakash The Rupganj incident should be taken seriously. The govt. should find out how serious it was, or, was it an isolated incident.
Anonymous The govt. has already approved this plan. Why did the common people reject this?
Mohammad Rashanul Haque Everyone who is employed by the state - doctor, nurse, teacher, postmaster, member of the armed forces, is serving the state. But, why does the govt. provide huge fund for land purchase to army officers selectively while depriving the vast majority, marginalising thousands of farmers? It is also against democratic values and moral spirit, and against the harmony of the society.
Mong Sano Marma We shall be happy if we can see a comprehensive report. Direct confrontation is not a good sign and if any vested interest groups, as retired Major General Shafiullah suggested, are working covertly - be it an internal or external source, we want to know about it. These incidents cannot possibly go unnoticed.
Sheikh Monirul Islam, Opee Was RAB created for this kind of operation? They did not look like an elite force of police department. We are very much worried.
Shamima Begum Shelley It is high time that armed forces became aware of their responsibility to maintain high standards and sanctity by avoiding such controversial actions.
Hafizur Rahman Arman The powerful are always able to fulfil their wishes.
Wahed This incident may disturb the democratic process of Bangladesh. It is not clearly understood why the Army is buying land in such a locality where hundreds of land robbers and their musclemen are active. It is quite natural that these land robbers will try to create panic for their own interest.
Mtrza Mehedi Hasan Why did the police open fire? What provoked them to do so?
Abdul Karim The outburst is due to the failure of the authorities to redress the sufferings of the public. This may turn serious if they do not make all out efforts to remove those.
