President Zillur Rahman yesterday asked the private universities to ensure permanent infrastructures with adequate open spaces to groom students as enlightened human beings. ''Broadness of thoughts and spirit is necessary to build enlightened human beings, and free and open environment is indispensable for this.'' He said higher studies can be given in a closed-door classroom, but it might not inculcate intellectual broadness in a student. Zillur was presiding over the 1st convocation of United International University (UIU) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city. Students of Shanti Niketan, established by poet Rabindranath Tagore, are taught in a free environment, said the president. ''I hope all concerned will promptly take necessary measures realising the spirit of my statement.'' He termed lack of permanent infrastructures a big obstacle for the development of private universities in the country. Former secretary and ambassador Muslehuddin Ahmad was the convocation speaker while UIU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr M Rezwan Khan and Chairman of the Board of Directors Hasan Mahmud Raza, among others, spoke at the programme. A total of 489 students from different disciplines were conferred degrees with four students receiving the Chancellor's Gold Medal for excellent academic results.
