Speakers at a conference here yesterday stressed the need for building leadership skills of the new generation to lead the country properly in the future competitive world. They observed that there is no alternative to strong leadership in making a successful democracy. The daylong conference titled “Leadership, civic engagement and new media” was held at Asian University for Women (AUW) in the city. Centre for Leadership Assistance and Promotion (CLAP) organised the conference in cooperation with The Daily Star, Bangladesh School of Debate and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB). Vice Provost for International Faculty Exchanges and Programmes of AUW Prof Sangita Rayamajhi was the chief guest at the opening session of the conference with its Convener Moumita Basak making the welcome address. Speakers said it is high time to prepare the future leaders to remove all barriers to the society's welfare and development. They also said the country's youth have a bright future for leadership since they have courage and potentials. Leadership does not only mean political leadership but is something connected with morality where a leader is always capable of carrying out the thought and norms of society. During the programme, faculty members of AUW also conducted sessions on different topics like new media and leadership. A teleconference on “Self leadership” was also held with Toronto University Leadership Club. Students of Dhaka University, Chittagong University (CU), AUW, Premier University and Independent University of Bangladesh participated in the conference. Prof ABM Masud Mahmood of English Department of CU, Chittagong Bureau In-charge of The Daily Star AKM Raisul Huq Bahar, President of UNYSAB Wasim Newaz and Chairman of Bangladesh School of Debate Saiful Abedin were present as special guests.
