Staff Correspondent
Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque yesterday instructed the judicial magistrates to dispose of all the cases filed before 2005 through holding quick hearings on priority basis. The instructions came at a conference at the Judges Lounge of the Supreme Court where the chief justice met 75 senior judicial magistrates from across the country. Around 16 lakh cases are now pending with the lower courts across the country, SC Registrar Ashraful Islam told The Daily Star. Ashraful, who was present at the function, said the chief justice requested the lower court judges to discharge their duties with diligence and professional ethics for consolidating rule of law and justice. The chief justice asked the magistrates to record the statements of witnesses without any unnecessary delay for quick disposal of the cases. He also advised them to inform the higher authorities if police don't submit enquiry reports to the courts in time. The SC registrar said the judges talked about different issues including shortage of judges, courtrooms and manpower. In response, the chief justice assured them that the SC will take every possible step to solve their problems. The meeting was part of a series of conferences that the chief justice has been holding with the lower court judges on Friday and Saturday every week.
