Pilkhana Carnage
Court decision on Jan 5
A Dhaka court yesterday fixed January 5 for giving its decision whether the charges of Pilkhana carnage cases against 824 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) jawans and civilians would be taken into cognizance or not.
The court also directed the jail authority to produce the accused, now in jail, before it on the scheduled date.
Judge Mohammad Zohurul Hoque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order after hearing from the prosecution and the defence.
Two cases were filed -- one for killing and the other for possessing firearms, ammunition and explosives -- during the mutiny at BDR Pilkhana headquarters on February 25-26 last year.
On July 12, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) indicted 824 BDR soldiers and civilians in the killing case for 24 criminal charges including murder, arson, looting, hiding of bodies, and sedition during the mutiny.
In the charge sheet, former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and Awami League leader Torab Ali were made accused.
Later, CID also submitted another charge sheet against 807 BDR personnel and one civilian in another case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
