Jail term of Sheikh Helal scrapped
The High Court yesterday scrapped seven years' imprisonment of former Awami League lawmaker Sheikh Helaluddin in an extortion case filed during the last caretaker government.
A special court on February 12, 2008, convicted Helal and gave him the sentence in the case filed by one Mamtaz Uddin on behalf of construction firm Reza Construction Ltd. Helal was charged with extorting Tk 1.02 crore from the firm owner.
An HC bench of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore yesterday acquitted Sheikh Helal of the extortion charge by granting an appeal filed by him against the trial court verdict.
Earlier, Helal got HC bail in this case. Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder appeared for Helal.
