Charges against 200 BDR jawans read out

The mutiny at the BDR Pilkhana headquarters broke out with sepoy Kajol Ali firing three shots in the air signalling at the mutineers, the prosecutor of a mutiny case told the Special Court- 11 yesterday. Prosecutor Lt Col Kazi Aniruddha said that on February 25 last year, when the then BDR director general (DG) Shakil Ahmed was conducting the Darbar, sepoy Moin entered the Darbar Hall followed by sepoy Kajol and pointed a firearm at Shakil. Moin became nervous and fainted as senior officers came forward to disarm him. Soon Kajol went out and fired three blank shots from his rifle, said Aniruddha during the trial of 675 BDR members of 44 Rifle Battalion of the Pilkhana headquarters. Sepoy Selim Reza is also one of the BDR jawans who played the key role when a group of mutineers entered the Darbar Hall to kill BDR high officials including the then DG. During the trial proceedings yesterday, all the accused of the case filed for killing, arson, looting and dumping bodies of army officers were produced before the Special Court- 11. The BDR members accused only of mutiny were produced in handcuffs while those who are accused of both mutiny and murder produced in shackles. Charge sheets were submitted against 120 of the accused. The three-member court headed by Col Iftekharuddin Ahmed read out specific charges against 200 accused including Selim Reza and Kajol until it adjourned proceedings at 3:30pm. The court will resume tomorrow at 10:00am. The two other members of the court are Lt Col Shahadat Hossain and Major Alamgir while Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Ullah Kislu assisted the court. Earlier, the mutiny case was tried in the Special Court-5 but shifted to the Special Court-11 after the authorities reconstituted the special courts. On April 27, the hearing of the case was adjourned until yesterday. A total of 74 people including 57 army officials were killed during the February 25-26 mutiny at the BDR headquarters last year. The charges against the accused mutineers include leaving the Darbar Hall in violation of the orders of the then BDR DG, collecting arms, ammunition and magazines from arsenal and keeping those in their possession illegally, failing to control subordinates and intruding into the BDR DG's house known as rifle house.
