Generate new ideas to tackle climate change, PM asks experts

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the scientists and technical experts to innovate ways for adapting to climate change. The prime minister also called upon them to work for increasing usage of renewable sources of energy compatible with economic growth. “We will have to ensure abundance of food for all and keep our planet alive from the onslaught of pollution,” Hasina said while she was addressing the 24th convocation of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) as the chief guest yesterday. She advised the new graduates to face and overcome all future challenges through the knowledge and skills they attain from the education they receive at the university. “You will need to overcome numerous challenges like poverty and hunger, scarcity of food and energy, climate change and natural disasters” Hasina said. She recalled that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led Bangladesh to join the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in August, 1974. She also lauded the achievements of the OIC and Bangladesh in establishing the IUT, which has now grown as a premier institution of science and engineering with students' enrolment from all over the Muslim world. She expressed her happiness as the IUT authorities have decided to enrol female students to the university to create more opportunities for women in higher education. In this regard, Hasina advised the authorities to start construction work of its female dormitory on the present campus. She said efforts are on to buy land for setting up the female dormitory. “We are trying to buy a land for setting up the female dormitory. But price of land is now so high. Better you start construction of the female dormitory on the present campus,” she said. Hasina said women's participation in nation building is essential for real development. She mentioned the National Education Policy-2010 which targets gender equality in education, free education for both males and females up to graduate level and cent percent literacy by 2014. “It also aims at integrating various systems including madrasas with a unified curriculum to establish knowledge and technology based Digital Bangladesh” she added. Earlier, Hasina distributed certificates and medals among the successful graduates of 2009-2010. Mohammad Monjurul Ehsan from the department of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering secured the OIC Gold Medal-2010 in Bachelor of Science Degree. Khan Mohammad Foysal from Technical Education Department in Master of Science, SM Masudur Rahman Al-Arif from Electoral and Electronic Engineering in Bachelor of Science and Abid Hasan in Bachelor of Science from Computer Science and Information Technology received IUT Gold Medal-2010 for their outstanding results in the examinations. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Imtiaz Hossain gave the address of welcome at the convocation. OIC Assistant Secretary General Abdul Moiz Bokhari read out the message of Secretary General Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu at the function. Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and Ambassador of Turkey in Dhaka Mehmet Vakur Erkul and also the chairman of the governing board of the university were present on the occasion.
