A man stabbed his wife to death at a hotel room in the city's Banani yesterday over an allegation of an extra marital relation. The dead was identified as Mahinur Akhter Mehrun, 25. Police said hotel staff Safiuddin and Mohammad Nasir rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead. OC of Shahbag Police Station Rezaul Karim told the Daily Star that after the incident, victim's husband Mohammad Hasan surrendered to the police. They resided in a rental house in the city's Mollartek of Dakkhinkhan. Quoting Hasan, the OC said they locked in an altercation over the extra marital relation. Earlier, Hasan requested her either to cut contact with her cousin Mohammad Raju or divorce him, said the OC. Hasan alleged that Mehrun at one stage decided to divorce him but demanded Tk 1 lakh to do that. "Then at one stage I stabbed her to death at about 7:00am, locked her in the room we had rented yesterday and left the hotel," Hasan told the police. Raju's father and Mehrun's uncle Moshiur Khandkar alleged that Mehrun has been killed for dowry. She was tortured and this prompted her to stay at her mother's house as her family refused to give him Tk 1 lakh as dowry since Hasan married this orphan girl off eight months ago, said Moshiur. "He had not contacted with her last one month and came to see her four days back at her mother's house in Gazipur and took her with him yesterday morning saying that they would resume their conjugal life," he added.
