Term 'eve teasing' sexual harassment

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker requested the media to term ''eve teasing'' sexual harassment or women repression or an offence so that culprits cannot evade due punishment. ''As a busy professional force, we have to act faster against the culprits. The media build a public support against the incidents making the task of police easier.'' The IGP was briefing the press at his office in the city yesterday after a meeting with police high officials. He is also considering assigning personnel to whom victims of harassment can send SMS for help. Police camps will be set up at important points across the country including the city ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to prevent extortion in transport sector, said Khandaker. He urged the chiefs of intelligence wings to gather information of criminals and crime zones in the country so that law enforces can take actions against them, facilitating trade and commerce centering the Eid. Over 50 thousand additional law enforcers including Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) will be fanned out across the country as of November 11. A three-stage security arrangement will be designed to make sure the safety of people before, after, and on the Eid day, he said. Dhaka Metropolitan Police will set up a control room at Sadarghat in the city to check overloads on water vehicles. Black-marketing of tickets of bus, train and water vehicles will also be checked. Law enforces will keep watch to stop rawhide smuggling through borders. Khandaker also said about adequate steps to give foolproof security in Eid congregations across the city. Deputy inspector generals of police, commissioners of metropolitans, and intelligence wing chiefs attended the meeting chaired by the IGP.
