PM urges new Swedish ambassador

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged Sweden to import ships from Bangladesh as the country is manufacturing ships that meet the international standard. The PM said Sweden could benefit by importing the ships as Bangladesh has already exported ships to several countries including of Europe. She made the call while talking to newly appointed Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Anne Margareta (Anneli) Lindahl Kenny when the latter paid a courtesy call on her at the prime minister's office (PMO). On bilateral trade and business, the PM said the government has allocated designated areas for ship building industries to flourish in the country. Various other issues of national and bilateral development were discussed during the meeting. The PM thanked Sweden and other European countries for their all-out support in holding the general elections on December 29 in 2008 and thus restoring democracy in Bangladesh. Setting up of solar panel in Bangladesh for power generation, construction of a deep-sea port, elevated expressway, subway and railway link in Bangladesh came up during the discussion. Margareta recalled the PM's visits to Sweden and lauded her leadership and valuable contributions to face climate change and global warming. She also greeted Bangladesh for being elected as a member of International Telecommunications Union. The PM and the Swedish envoy expressed their hope that bilateral relations between the two countries would be further strengthened in the days to come. Ambassador at Large M Ziauddin, Secretary to the PMO Mollah Waheeduzzaman and PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present.
