The deadlock at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU) is still prevailing. The university has been closed since December 14 last year as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) enforced an indefinite strike on December 13. Among other demands, they insisted on the removal of the university's Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Nitish Chandra Debnath for his alleged involvement in corruption and nepotism. CVASU authority expelled five Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for lifetime including its convener for assaulting and misbehaving with some of the university's teachers and staffs on August 28 of 2010. Meanwhile Prof Nitish's tenure as VC expired on November 4. In a letter to the registrar, he confirmed joining back to Microbiology department. Chowdhury Mohhammad Allauddin, treasurer of CVASU, is currently acting as VC, according to section 10(3) of university act, but BCL varsity unit is still continuing strike, now demanding withdrawal of the expulsion order of the five students. Allauddin, while talking to The Daily Star, said he is trying to come to an understanding with the demonstrating students. He assured to sit with every section of the university so that academic activities could run normally. Registrar Prof Md Kabirul Islam Khan said the students would be invited to solve all their problems through discussion. He said, “The administrative activities of the university are going on. If the students come back to the campus we are ready to take classes.” Prof Nitish said it is the responsibility of those students, who created the situation, to encourage and bring back the general students to the campus too. “I hope normal academic activities will go on and my cooperation will be with the university authority all the time,” he added. Proctor Gowtam Kumar Debnath said university students want to come back but a small group of students, in the name of BCL, created a deadlock situation, increasing session-jams.
