Case against Arafat Koko deferred till Jan 10
A Dhaka court yesterday deferred the hearing until January 10 of a tax evasion case filed against Arafat Rahman Koko, the youngest son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Judge Mohammad Zohurul Hoque of the Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order following a petition seeking an adjournment of the hearing.
In the yesterday's petition, Koko's lawyer prayed for the adjournment saying a High Court (HC) rule is pending that challenged the legal basis of the case.
The HC issued the rule on a writ petition submitted earlier, he added.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on March 1 this year filed the case against Koko for evading income tax for fiscal years from 2002-2003 to 2006-2007.
A lower court issued an arrest warrant against Koko and directed police to submit report on execution of arrest warrant following the case on March 1.
Koko was released on parole on July 17, 2008 on health grounds. He is staying abroad since then for treatment.
On August 19, the home ministry cancelled the parole and asked Koko to return home by August 31 and surrender to court.
Challenging the government decision, Koko's counsels filed a writ petition with the HC on August 24, and obtained an extension of parole till October 4 for his client.
Again, on October 13, a Supreme Court stay order of six weeks extended Koko's parole for 20 more days.
On October 31, another Dhaka court had issued an arrest warrant against Koko in connection with a money laundering case.
