Removal of CHT land body chief demanded
Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) yesterday demanded immediate removal of Chittagong Hill Tracts Land Commission Chairman Khademul Islam Chowdhury accusing him of acting against the peace accord.
Leaders of the organisation raised the demand at a protest rally held at the capital's Muktangaon.
The rally also pushed for amending the CHT Land Commission Act in the winter session of the parliament.
They urged the government to announce a roadmap to implement the CHT peace treaty within a specific time frame.
The leaders said though the land commission was formed as per a provision of the CHT peace treaty of 1997 to resolve land disputes in the area, its chairman has been acting against the treaty and thus further deepening the problems.
The long-standing problem in the area is a national crisis, observed the PCJSS Organising Secretary Shaktipada Tripura.
He blamed the government for not taking effective measures to resolve the crises as per its electoral pledges. He also warned the government of tough agitation if it does not amend the act.
Gano Forum Presidium Member Pankaj Bhattacharya, lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badshah, Proshenjit Chowdhury, Batayan Chakma, Sanjib Drong of Bangladesh Adivashi Forum and Robindranath Saren of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad, addressed the meeting.
