Cops among 15 hurt in clash with Hijbut men

17 suspected followers held, Jihadi materials seized

At least 15 people, including two cops, were injured in a two-hour long clash with Islamist militant group Hijbut Tawhid at Uzirpur upazila town yesterday evening. Police arrested 17 suspected Hijbut activities, including six female from the spot. Jihadi books and CDs, posters, leaflets, calendars, microphones, loudspeakers were also recovered from their possession. Police and local sources said musullis from different mosques of the Uzirpur Bandar called a rally after Asr prayers yesterday demanding ban of Hijbut Tawhid for their extremism and provocative activities. When the procession reached near Uzirpur Launch Ghat area at about 5:00pm, Tawhid men led by Mozammel Hossain Manik, a lecturer of Shikarpur Sher-e-Bangla College, attacked the musullis with hammers and sticks that led to the clash. A chase and counter-chase in different parts of the town took place during the clash.
