Call to conserve Prabartak Hill
Eminent citizens in Chittagong yesterday demanded conservation of Prabartak Sangha Hill, now an open space, as Department of Environment (DoE) on Monday removed fencing erected by a real estate firm intending to build a market there.
DoE Director (Enforcement) Munir Chowdhury said he would recommend the demand to Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and Chittagong City Corporation.
Emphasising on turning the city into an aesthetic one by preserving existing hills and ponds, Prof Dr Anupam Sen, said the hill is a national heritage and must be declared a conservation area.
Meanwhile, Tinkori Chakrabaty, secretary of Prabartak Sangha Standing Committee, yesterday said Prabartak Sangha was established to help some 1,200 orphans. Those demanding to conserve the hill can buy it for Tk 200 crore and do so, he added.
Zerina Hossain, a town planner, said CDA permitted the construction though it lies within DAP.
Prabartak Sangha Rakkha O Sanrakkhan Committee (committee to protect and preserve Prabartak Sangha) filed a case with Third Joint District Judge's Court on Tuesday, asking to dismiss the agreement between Prabartak Sangha and the real estate firm.
