Fifth population census begins on March 15

Preparations for holding the fifth Population and Housing Census are going on in full swing to conduct it from March 15. Talking to the news agency Secretary to Statistics Division Riti Ibrahim said this is for the first time Bangladesh is going to use first ever-digital enumeration map and a unique geo-coding system for holding the five-day census till March 19. She said digital enumeration map and computerised geo-coding system would use to process the data in the shortest possible time and disseminate results simultaneously in hard and soft formats, as well as on the web page. The statistics division chief said over 70,000 maps, made by Arial photograph, that contain each mouja and unions across the country would be used in conducting the census. To conduct the census, Riti Ibrahim said, the country would be divided into 130 census districts while Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will engage 2,700 zonal offices. There will be 60,000 supervisors who will be selected from local educated youths to engage in census across the country. One supervisor will oversee six to seven enumerators of 3.10 lakh enumerators in data collection. The country will also be divided into 3.10 lakh enumeration areas each of them would collect data from 120 households. Riti Ibrahim said the census would be conducted to collect basic characteristics of all households and population of the country. Later, post enumeration quality check survey will be conducted to determine the coverage and content error of the main census. Bangladesh has a long history of census. The first one conducted in this territory was in 1872. Since then censuses were conducted on a decennial basis, regularly. This year's census is the fifth since the country's independence. “We have taken a number of steps to strengthen the capacity of state run BBS that includes the upcoming population and housing census”, she said.
