Activists of Dinajpur unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) blocked Dinajpur-Dhaka highway for one and a half hours yesterday demanding cancellation of its recently formed convener committee. The agitators also damaged several vehicles and burnt the effigies of central BCL President Mahmudul Hasan Ripon and General Secretary Mahfuzur Haidar Chowdhury Rotan, in front of Dinajpur Government College. Protesting formation of the convener committee 'in violation of party rules', local BCL leaders and activists brought out a procession in Dinajpur town yesterday morning. After parading different streets, they held a rally near the gate of Dinajpur Government College. At around 11:00am, the agitators blocked Dinajpur-Dhaka highway, halting road communication with different districts including Rangpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Dhaka and Bogra. Hundreds of passengers in vehicles got stranded in the scorching heat. They burnt tyres at different places and damaged several vehicles including a pickup, sources said. Police rushed to the spot but did not take any action. At around 1:20pm, the agitators withdrew their blockade. Earlier on April 20, the leaders and activists of Dinajpur Chhatra League held a press conference at Dinajpur Press Club demanding that party high-ups dissolve the five-member convener committee formed early this month. Shabbir Ahmed Suzan, secretary of Dinajpur Government College unit of Chhatra League, read out a written statement there. At the press conference, aggrieved leaders said Parvez Chowdhury Porag, a student of Open University, was selected as convener of the committee. Four other members of the committee are Rubel Hossain, a motorcycle driver of district organisational secretary of the party, Allama Ashraful, an accused in a case for stalking, Saikat Poul, a student of a private university in Dhaka, who is not involved with political activities in Dinajpur, and Shadekur Rahman Biplop, a student of Dinajpur government College, who is not politically active. When contacted, the members of the five-member convening committee said central leaders formed the committee and the allegations of the protesters are baseless. About 10 months ago, the 139-member executive committee of Dinajpur Chhatra League was dissolved as its tenure expired, sources said.
