Ten stolen cars recovered

The Detective Branch (DB) of police recovered ten stolen private cars worth around Tk 2.38 crore and arrested five carjackers in this regard from different parts of the capital, Gazipur and Narayanganj over the last two days. The bust also revealed a ring operating with the help of corrupt personnel working at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for smooth disposal of the stolen vehicles. The remorseless leader of the carjacking group bragged to The Daily Star that the last time he was arrested he secured bail within one and a half months of his arrest, and this time he hoped to return to his trade in just a few months. Ring leader Jubaraj alias Rony, 28 and his accomplices Iqbal Hossain, 23, Nadim, 27 were arrested from Narayanganj town while Mohammad Khonkon Mian, 40, was arrested from Sutrapur in the city and Mohammad Mostofa, 30 from Gazipur. Following statements by the arrestees, the DB team led by Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Mukhlesur Rahman of DMP recovered F Premio, X Fielder, G Corolla, Harrier, X Corolla cars from Gazipur, Turag, Narayangonj and city's Tejgaon, Uttara, Motijheel, Kafrul and Paltan areas. Rony told The Daily Star that his gang operates with the help of brokers at BRTA office in the capital. Some unscrupulous employees at BRTA prepare fake documents for the stolen vehicles and maintain these fake records in the office alongside the original ones.
