'Build power sub-station'
Local people and civil society leaders here yesterday demanded building of a power grid sub-station in the hilly district for smooth power and water supply.
At a human chain, they said only 14 megawatts (MW) of electricity is required each day for 15,000 consumers of eight upazilas in Khagrachhari and three upazilas in Rangamati.
But Power Development Board (PDB) has been supplying only 5-6 megawatts per day causing sufferings to the hilly people, they said.
The participants also alleged that PDB has misappropriated government money in the name of maintenance, but did not add a single megawatt in last 30 years since 1981.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Anis-ul Haque Bhuyan with a number of demands.
Sushasoner Jonny Nagorik (Sujon) organised the human chain in Muktamanchha area in the district town of Khagrachhari. Sujon vice president (Khagrachhari district) Modhu Mongal Chakma presided over the programme.
