Updated law to cut riverine accident
Says shipping minister
The government has taken initiatives to modernise the existing riverine law to ensure marine safety and reduce riverine accident, said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan.
"We need to review the law and it will be done following the rules and regulations of the International Maritime Organisation," he said.
The minister said this to a view exchange meeting organised by Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) at Jatiya Press Club in the city on Thursday.
BLAST Vice President Justice Awlad Ali chaired the function, while Nijera Kori Coordinator Khushi Kabir moderated it.
Department of Shipping Director General Jobair Ahmad stressed the need for restoration of navigability of different riverine routes to prevent accidents.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Abdul Malek Miah said three new dredgers will start operation by this month to restore navigability.
Jibanananda Jayanta, general secretary of the Protect and Progress Foundation (PPF), in his paper made some recommendations to cut riverine accidents include creating mass awareness, increasing of marine court and keeping safety equipment in all the vessels.
