PM against caretaker govt for self-interest: BNP
Leaders of the main opposition BNP yesterday alleged that the prime minister is avoiding the Supreme Court suggestion to hold two more elections under neutral caretaker government to gain her own political interest.
They said any one party attempt to amend the constitution by scrapping the caretaker government system would be “thrown into the dustbin” like the fourth amendment (the amendment brought to establish Bakshwal).
They were speaking at a rally in front of BNP central office in the city called in protest of arrest and torture on party leaders during Sunday's countrywide hartal.
“Prime minister made irresponsible remarks regarding caretaker government system showing the court verdict before viewing the full verdict.
“She wants to implement her party's political agenda while keeping guns on the shoulder of the judiciary,” said Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, a BNP standing committee member.
Referring to former chief justice Khairul Haque's statement regarding the independence of judiciary, he questioned how people could accept the verdict since Khairul himself admitted that the judiciary was still not independent.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said prime minister is going against the caretaker government system using one portion of the verdict while ignoring the other part with the court's suggestion.
He urged the prime minister to refrain from playing any dangerous game centring the caretaker government system.
“People expressed their support towards non party caretaker system by making the hartal a success. So the plan to scrap the caretaker government system must be withdrawn otherwise people will resist it,” he said.
City BNP Member Secretary Abdus Salam presided over the rally, where party leaders Rafiqul Islam Mia, Barkatullah Bulu and Mahbubuddin Kokhon also spoke.
Meanwhile, BNP constituted a legal aid committee with Supreme Court Bar Association President Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Dhaka Lawyers Association President Sanaullah Mia as president and member secretary respectively.
The committee would provide legal support to party leaders to face cases filed against them.
