People from all walks of life thronged Central Shaheed Minar in the city yesterday to catch a glimpse of and pay respect to eminent artist Prof Emeritus Mohammad Kibria. He passed away at LabAid Hospital due to old-age complications on Tuesday at the age of 82. Relatives, students, political leaders, cultural figures and academicians paid tribute with flowers when his coffin was brought in an ambulance around 10:00am. Many fans burst into tears as they stood by the man who was one of the pioneers in modern art movement in Bangladesh. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Tamotsu Shinotsuka, comedian Tele Samad, former adviser to a caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury and Indian artist Nriten Shaha were present. Prime minister's Assistant Personal Secretary Saifuzzaman Shekhar, on her behalf, placed wreath at the coffin. The body was then taken to the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University (DU) where he served as a teacher for many years. He was laid to rest at Mirpur Intellectuals Graveyard after namaz-e-janaza in front of DU Central Mosque after Juma prayers.
