Practicing Democracy
First ever pry student council polls today
After successful completion of piloting at 100 primary schools, elections of Student Council, a new concept of practicing democratic norms from childhood, will be held at 600 schools across the country today.
Student Council in the form of a shadow parliamentary system of governance was first launched in the country last year in 100 schools as pilot basis aiming at creating quality leadership, practicing democratic norms and values and exhibiting tolerance to others' opinions in the minds from early childhood.
“After witnessing huge enthusiasm about the Student Council among students, teachers and even the guardians at those 100 schools, we have decided to form councils at 600 primary schools this year,” Deputy Director of Directorate of Primary Education M Fasiullah told the news agency yesterday.
Under the concept of forming Student Council, students of class three to five will elect council members for one year by casting their votes. After the election, one will be selected or elected as prime minister by voice vote from among the members of the council.
Then the elected prime minister will distribute portfolio among his or her cabinet like a parliamentary system of democracy. There will be ministers for education, midday meal, environment, health, water resource, teaching materials, cultural affairs and sports, reception of guests and others as per the recommendations of the general students.
