Speakers at a rally yesterday demanded the tanneries be immediately relocated from the city's Hazaribagh area to avert serious environmental and health hazards. They also demanded exemplary punishment to the people responsible for releasing untreated tannery wastes into rivers and a permanent solution to waterlogging in the area. Poribesh Bachao Andolan (Poba) and Nagarik Adhikar Sangrakhan Forum (NASF) jointly organised the rally following a human chain at Hazaribagh dame. Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan said, "Water of the rivers round the capital is not eligible for treatment because of pollution caused by the Hazaribagh tanneries." "Tannery wastage is being used as poultry feed which is very harmful for public health," he said. "So tanneries from the area must be shifted to avoid further health hazards." NASF president (Hazaribagh zone) Rustam Khan and Green Mind Society president Amir Hasan, among others, addressed the rally.
