RMG workers block road for pay hike
Several hundred workers of a ready-made garments factory blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway yesterday for about an hour demanding salary raise.
Later authorities of the factory Southern Clothing Limited in Board Bazar Kalameswar area under Gazipur Sadar shut it for an indefinite period.
The manager of the factory on Friday filed a general diary with Joydevpur Police station against 85 workers by name.
Witnesses said more than 1,200 workers came to the factory around 8:00am and blocked traffic movement on the adjacent highway.
On information, police came to the spot but failed to mediate between the authorities and the workers. After 9:00am, police chased the workers away but the road remained clogged till around 10:00am.
Officer-in-Charge SM Quamaruzzaman of Joydevpur Police Station said additional police were deployed in the area.
