Stop Jugitila hill cutting : HC
The High Court yesterday directed the government to take steps to stop cutting Jugitila Hill at Amborkhana in Sylhet.
Delivering a verdict on a writ petition, the court also ordered the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to protect the hill from cutting and encroachment.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore delivered the verdict after hearing a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela).
The organisation filed the petition as public interest litigation on June 29, 2009 stating that one Abdul Awal has initiated to cut Jugitila Hill damaging the environment.
The petitioner sought HC directive on the authorities to stop cutting of the hill and protect it.
The HC on the same day issued a rule upon the government and Abdul Awal to explain why they should not be directed to stop cutting the hill and to take steps to protect it.
Advocate Iqbal Kabir Lytton appeared for Bela, while Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain stood for the government.
