21 pro-hartal activists held in Ctg
Police detained 21 pro-hartal activists from different places in the port city on the second day of the 36 hours hartal enforced by main opposition BNP and it key ally Bangladesh Jaamat-e-Islami yesterday.
BNP activists led by its city unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury for several times tried to bring out processions from BNP office at Nasimon Bhabhan at Kazir Dewri around 10:30am but they could not hold it due police obstruction.
Police picked up nine BNP activists and forced others to stay on the footpath in front of its office.
Two BNP men were detained from Kulgaon in Oxygen area as they tried to bring out a procession while three others from Sagorika Petrol Pump area at 3:00am while trying to vandalise vehicles, said police sources.
Seven Jaamat-e-Islami activists were arrested from Khulshi and Wasa area while picketing.
Deputy Commissioner (North) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Amena Begum said the arrestees had been placed before the mobile court.
The main roads were seen with a very few transports though rickshaw movements were normal and the shops remained close during hartal.
