Principal's removal demanded
Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Academy (BMFA) cadets here yesterday demanded immediate removal of its principal and other staff and urged the government to appoint a new principal to solve the present unrest.
They announced a sit-in programme in front of Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on June 18 to draw the prime minister's attention.
Over 100 students were injured as police charged baton on them on Tuesday as they were staging a sit-in on BMFA parade ground demanding issuing of Continuous Discharge Certificates, necessary for them to join ocean-going vessels.
At a press conference at Chittagong Press Club yesterday, the cadets described how they were tortured at night after the academy's main gate was locked.
They alleged Principal Captain ATGM Sarkar, in presence of deputy secretary of Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, first started charging truncheons though police did not want to on the uniformed cadets.
Assistant Commissioner AKM Imran Buyan of Port Zone said the principal filed a general diary with Karnaphuli Police Station in this connection.
The principal could not be reached over phone despite repeated attempts.
