Road crashes kill 12, injure 55

Twelve people were killed and 55 others injured in separate road accidents in Bogra, Rangpur, Panchagar, Thakurgaon, Khulna and Satkhira yesterday. Our Bogra correspondent reports: At least four people were killed and 21 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on the Dhaka-Bogra highway in Sherpur upazila. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Bulbul, a sub-inspector of Sherpur Police Station, said the accident occurred at about 10:00am when a Dhaka-bound bus of TR Travels collided with an oncoming truck near Ghoga bridge. The truck driver and two passengers of the bus died on the spot, while the fourth succumbed to his injuries at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra. The injured were taken to the medical college hospital and Sherpur Upazila Health Complex. Our Rangpur correspondent adds: At least three people were killed and six others injured as a truck overturned in Pirganj upazila yesterday. Police said the accident took place a Rangpur-bound truck coming from Bogra turned turtle near Rasulpur at about 7:00am after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving three people dead on the spot. The deceased are Rabiul Islam, 35, Tanu, 35, and Asrat Ali, 38, residents of Chatgram village of Nilphamari. The injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Our Thakurgaon correspondent says: Two people were killed and 15 others injured in separate road accidents in Panchagar and Thakurgaon. One young man was killed and 15 others were injured as a Dinajpur-bound bus lost its control and fell into a roadside ditch on Debiganj-Jharbari road in Laxminarayoni Bazar area of Debiganj upazila in Panchagar yesterday. The deceased was identified as Babu, 35, of Elahigaon village of Birganj upazila in Dinajpur. The injured were admitted to Debiganj Health Complex. Meanwhile, A bicyclist was killed as a bus hit the bicyclist from behind on Pirganj-Birganj road at Futkibari village of Pirganj upazila in Thakurgaon on Friday. The victim was identified as Saral Chandra, 35, of Futkibari village under the same upazila. UNB from Khulna adds: At least three people were killed and eight others injured in head-on collision between a bus and a Nasimon (human hauler) on Khulna-Satkhira road at Aatharomile Bazar in Dumuria yesterday. The deceased were identified as Mofez Ali Sheikh, 70, Bhim Paul, 37, and an unidentified woman aged about 40. The injured were rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital. UNB from Satkhira says: At least five cops of lawmaker H M Golam Reza's vehicles' convoy were seriously injured when a police van skidded and dashed against a roadside tree while giving side to a truck coming from opposite direction at Chaltetola at Bharashimla in Kaliganj upazila yesterday. The injured were admitted to Nalota Hospital and Satkhira Hospital. The lawmaker escaped unhurt. The truck managed to flee.
