'Ensure rights of challenged women'
Physically and mentally challenged women should be given equal rights and opportunities to make them self-reliant in the society, said speakers at a dialogue yesterday.
Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Samity (BPKS) organised the dialogue on the rights of challenged women at Jatiya Press Club in the city.
“We need to make sure that these [challenged] women can support themselves and be independent,” said Abdus Sattar Dulal, founder and executive director of BPKS.
Ashrafun Nahar Misti, chief of programme operation, said physically challenged people specially women face everyday problems in the areas of education, healthcare, transportation, workplace as well as in the society.
The number of challenged women in Bangladesh might be 1.20 crore, she said, adding that 95 percent of the challenged women are victims of physical or mental torture.
Prof Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah of Dhaka University was also present.
