SC stays Pintu's bail order

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld its chamber judge's order that stayed a High Court order granting bail to former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu in connection with the BDR mutiny case. The HC on June 7 granted ad-interim bail to Pintu for six months and also issued a rule upon the government to explain why he should not be granted regular bail in this case. The chamber judge of the Appellate Division stayed the HC order of bail on June 9. A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice SK Sinha yesterday upheld the chamber judge's order and asked the counsels for the government and Pintu to take steps for hearing the rule for its disposal as early as possible. It passed the order following a leave to appeal petition filed by the government against the HC order. Police filed the case with Lalbagh Police Station on February 28, 2009 in connection with the February 25-26 BDR carnage in Pilkhana Headquarters in 2009. Pintu was arrested on June 1 the same year. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared for the government, while advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain argued for Pintu.
